Michael Tue, 09 Mar 2010 04:40:21 +0000 http://sbarnabas.com/blog/?p=2414#comment-10199 I was born and brought up in the C of E - a Prayer Book (village Sarum?) believer. When the first priestess appeared, I left. I tried the Continuers - and found them splitting almost as soon as started, they were not The Church. I became Orthodox - blessed to the Western Rite - authorised by the Russian Synod in 1870 specifically for us here in England. Now I head the Western Rite Orthodox missions beginning here in England - directly under the Primate. I have a Bishop who is the best bishop that I have ever had - we are at one in theology, morality and ecclesiology - I am at peace in a Church with which I am wholly at one. I pray that St. Barnabas can find such peace. Fr. Michael frmichaelnw5 - at - gmail.com I was born and brought up in the C of E – a Prayer Book (village Sarum?) believer. God bless you. The Woggler: true repentance of sins merits forgiveness, for God is a loving God. You'll probably be more annoyed to hear that Myra Hindley is feasting at the table of the Saints: IF her conversion in prison was genuine, and her repentance true. All Christian denominations (however they might put it) acknowledge that God's unconditional love washes away all sins and turns everyone to him, however vile their crimes, if they truly and earnestly repent of them. It would be crass to make a self-congratulatory comparison with other faiths here - but I know of none other that offers such assurance of salvation howsoever short we may all fall. Woogler: Your comment is badly skewed regarding Christian teaching. God's forgiveness is immediate and unconditional because it flows from the source of Love i.e God. Nor is God's forgiveness dependent on a person being sorry as this would mean it is conditional. God loves us in the very midst of our sin, no matter how base it may be. Any true act of reconciliation (whether it be with God or a human being) requires the admission of truth, and in the case of the sinner, this means the acceptance that what has been done has been harmful, even destructive. As for the issue of eternal love, again you have Christian teaching skewed. The act of reconciliation involves accepting God's eternal love, which (like any encounter with love) prompts a response - hopefully of love in return. As the 1st Letter of John states: "Perfect love consists in this: not that we have loved God but that God has loved us..." (I John 4:10ff). We 'religious' types do indeed live in a bizarre world according to the values of society; but God's ways have never been our ways. It really is a bizarre world you religious types live in. So it would be a case of “You did an evil, despicable thing, but if you declare eternal love to me, I’ll forgive you.”
